The Little Guys
The Little Guys are wheel-thrown porcelain, fired in a gas kiln to roughly 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit, or cone 10. Each piece is small enough to fit neatly in the palm. The challenge at the start was how to keep them from being fussy, to make sure they had character and personality. The challenge at the end was not to devote myself entirely to these guys because even though I saw the real masters as the potters who could throw huge lumps of clay with grace and ease, my hands loved the little work and the marking, cutting and design that happened when the clay dried to leather. Some of the little guys want to be in groups. They can be quite insistent about this, and I have come to realize that what they say – goes.
